Embedded Heat Pipe Heat Sink Solutions
The performance of aluminium heatsinks in heat spreading can be improved by embedding heatpipes into the base plate of the heatsink.
Heatpipes can be embedded either totally or surface embedded.
For total embedding the heatpipe channels will be closed by friction stir welding of aluminium cover pieces over the heatpies.
By surface embedding the heatpies will be pressed into a half round groove and flattened to the surface of the heatsink.
Enclosed graph shows improvement of a heatsink with 320 x 370mm by using 3 heatpipes in the baseplate in comparison to a heatsink without embedded heatpipes.
As heatsource has been used a single IGBT element with size 130 x 140mm.
